TANZANIA Travelogue
February 2015
From the city of Arusha into the wilds of Manyara Ranch Conservancy, Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti National Parks.
Our entry to Tanzania and gateway to safari is the city of Arusha. Arriving in darkness, it's a hour's drive from Kilimanjaro International Airport to the Arusha Coffee Lodge where we planned to stay a day, shake off jet lag and get ourselves into safari mode. The drive there is a trip in itself. Big trucks barrel down a two lane highway while cars, safari vehicles and motor scooters weave, zip and squeeze in between at paces that range from chugging along to how-is-that-even-possible-with-all-this-congestion speed. To add to the frenzy, no matter how late or dark it is, the road is lined with pedestrians and bicycles. When traffic is crazy and I get nervous about possible collisions, I have this habit of closing my eyes. I'm surprised I saw anything until we got to the Coffee Lodge.
It was 10pm by the time we checked in, but the lodge kindly held the kitchen so we would have something for dinner. After the wear and tear of 2 long international flights, bacon, eggs and toast sounded as good as a hot bath so we opted for room service of "breakfast anytime."
