ABOUT OWED TO NATURE
Owed to Nature is the photography of Sylvia J. Zarco.
She is self-taught, driven and inspired by her passion for Wildness and Nature. Travel ignited her interest in both. As destinations became more and more remote, they challenged her to capture the essence of the land, its natural beauty and its wild creatures in ways that kept them close to her and honored the unspoilt ecosystems that created them.
From a home base in New England, she has traveled to Africa (Tanzania, Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Kenya, Zambia), the Arctic, Canada, Australia and throughout the US. Her early travels and photographs were recorded on film but she now shoots exclusively digital. Only digital photography is reflected in this portfolio.
Literally along the paths of her travels, a jewelry designer developed from the fascinating colors and shapes of earth found at her feet. Beads of stone captivate and dominate her designs. Each bead is unique, a combination of elements brought together and mixed by Nature, perfected by time into the colors and patterns we know as jasper, agate and semi-precious stones. And like these stones, her pieces are unique. She uses only pliers, wire, string and imagination to craft beads into individually designed earrings, necklaces, bracelets. No mass production here. Just custom designs that let small pieces of earth roll around in your hand and sparkle as you wear them.

FROM THE ARTIST
With each step taken in remote wilderness, you become aware of every sound, sight and sensation.
You have to, to survive.
With heightened awareness, you reach your destination and cherish the rewards of discovery made along the way.
But soon you must move on to another destination.
You have to, to survive.
So sights change, but awareness lingers. Learn to embrace it and it takes you places you never dreamed of.
It gives voice to inner passions whose tune you can't stop humming.
So you share your song for others to listen.
And you hope they will hear that it is their own rhythm and melody playing in the breezes around them.
You share and you hope.
You have to, for with each step taken, each note hummed, each discovery cherished, you've fallen in love with the world around you and, as Jacques Cousteau said, People protect what they love.
So listen, look, feel. And you will not just survive, you will Live.
